DRIVING TIPS FOR A RAINY DAY

Driving in the rain is never a fun thing but we are forced into driving by our daily obligations to move from one point to another. For most people, driving in the rain can be scary and nerve-racking experience.

To manage the anxiety and stress, we have to give our undivided attention and reduce any possible distractions by turning the radio volume down or turning off our phone to keep our attention fully on the road.

Here are some driving tips for a safe drive on a rainy day;

1. Keep your car clean and maintained
a.    Keep your windows clean and clear
b.    Maintain your headlights
c.    Maintain your tyres

2. Drive with care when it’s raining
a.    Turn on your windshield wipers
b.    Slow down as the road is wet and slippery
c.    Stay focused as visibility is dropping
d.    Turn your headlights on whether it’s day or night
e.    Drive with both hands on the wheel
f.     Maintain a 3-4 second gap between your car and the car in front of you.
g.    Avoid slamming on the brakes, better still just ease of the accelerator instead.
h.    Take turns or enter corner slowly
i.      Do not use cruise control as that can lead to Hydroplaning
j.      Park off the road if necessary

Keep in mind that sometimes the best driving decision you can make is to stay off the road completely until the weather clears.

10 SAFE DRIVING STEPS YOU MUST KNOW.

The rainy season is back and the risk factor while driving on Nigeria road would increase significantly as records have shown that more vehicle accidents takes place due to the heavy flood and faulty cars. These are some General tips which can ensure you are safe while driving in this season, they are:

1.  Drive slow on rainy days when the roads are still wet as the stopping distance usually increases considerably on wet roads. Also, brakes may be slightly less effective on rainy days as water generally seeps into the brake pads and disks.

2.   In case it is raining heavily and you cannot see ahead, turn on the headlights and fog lights and drive at a cautious speed.

3.    The Air conditioner should be maintained properly and to use the demister, set the fan speed to low, turn the vent control to windscreen, set control to fresh outside air, and turn on the AC and it will help the car glasses from fogging up.

4.   If you are to drive through stagnant water, do not panic. Put the car in first gear and move ahead gently. Do not drive fast and once you step into stagnant water do not stop your car, just keep moving or water might get into the tail pipe.

5.  Battery condition should be checked, and a coat of petroleum jelly should be applied to the terminals.

6.   Drive only if it’s necessary - Yes, you’ve heard it on the weather forecast all the time, but people say it for a reason. Put simply, if you don’t go out, you can’t come to any harm on the road. Is your journey really that urgent or important?

7.  Maintain proper following distance (3 seconds rule). This needs to be increased in wet weather.

8.    Be more alert watching for brake lights in front of you.

9.   Don’t follow large trucks or buses too closely, because the spray created by their large tires can reduce vision.

10. Drive in the tracks of a vehicle ahead of you.

10 SAFETY TIPS FOR THE HOME

Extreme weather conditions can cause serious damage to your home and in turn create unexpected costs and hassle. Weather conditions such as heavy rains/thunder storm can damage home properties if adequate preparation and sanitation are not done.

To prevent these unexpected expenses, a little preparation if done properly, goes a long way to taking care of your home during heavy rains.

We will now share 10 important safety tips/preparation that will help keep our properties and home safe, dry and flood-free this time of year.
1. Clean your ground drainage gutters. Rainfall in Nigeria can range from soft steadily falling drizzle to torrential downpours. You need to make sure all run-offs are being diverted away from your house and not going to cause flooding.
2. Fix your roof leaks. After the first hard rains, you’ll know if you have any roof leaks. Get them fixed as soon as possible so they don’t expand and become an even bigger problem.
3. Trim those trees hanging over your roof. Wind and the extra weight of water from rain can cause limbs to break, which could damage your roof or parked car.
4. Make sure not to have any standing water in your garden or around your property (buckets, unused flower pot plates, etc.) to avoid breeding places for mosquitoes, which can cause malaria.
5. Remember your pets. Have a safe and dry place for your pets to go during rain storms.

6. Avoid placing trash and recyclables in bags or containers directly on drains and inlets.
7. Fumigate around your house. Fumigating around the perimeter of your home (natural or otherwise) will help keep the insects, bugs and mosquitoes out of your living space.
8. Turn off all electrical appliance. Always switch off all electrical appliance when leaving home to prevent surge damage from lightning.
9. Buy rain gear. New door mats help keep your floors clean. Having an umbrella stand by the front door keeps track of your umbrellas so you always have one when you need one.
10. Close up every room windows. Whenever there is no one at home, ensure all windows in the home are properly sealed to stop rain from entering.
